All The Greats – Jeff Berlin

Bass Player: Jeff Berlin

A great little rocker from the 1986 ‘Pump It” album, ‘All The Greats’ is a strange mix of rock ‘n’ roll and Jazz. The groove is a kind of rock/funk hybrid but the harmony is much more sophisticated than you woudl expect from either of these genres. The tune is dedicated the the guys in the rock band Rush so I guess, like that band, the idea is to take the rock genre and add something different and aedgy to it. The final chorus is wonderfully simple root note playing, something which we don’t normally expect from Jeff Berlin but there are also passages based around double stops/chordal playing that we do. An interesting chart.
