Jeff Berlin – Bass

Everyone knows about the Kazumi Watanabe Trio albums, ‘Spice Of Life’ and ‘Spice Of Life Too’ and the Mo’ Bop series with Marcus Miller and Richard Bona but there are a lot of people that have not happened upon the 2013 recording the Japanese guitarist undertook with Jeff Berlin and drummer Vince Donati (now with Asia – I saw them earlier this year in a bar in Monmouth – it was a warm up gig for the band as Geoff Downes lives locally). There are some really diamonds on this record but this one is Watanabe’s arrangement of a Lennon and McCartney tune, ‘I Will’. None of Berlin’s normal shredding, just a percolating groove (Berlin like his dead notes). The transcription doesn’t include the intro which is out of time and I didn’t want to get into that. The part comes in with the drums.

NB: metronome mark is wrong – it reads 83 but it should be 120. I lost the Sibelius file so cannot amend without rewriting the whole chart.
