Luiz De Oliveira da Costa Maia – Bass

I was asked to put this one together by a gentleman on one of the Facebook transcription forums. He was commenting on the presence of Brazilian tunes on this website. I am a massive fan of Brazilian stuff, having played a lot with a Brazilian singer/guitarist/composer who turned me on to hundreds of Brazilian artists I would never have heard otherwise.

Born in 1946, Maria Bethania is the baby sister of Brazilian Caetano Veloso (who I am also a fan of) but her success is not remotely nepotistic; she has a strong, characterful voice and makes everything she sings sound incredible. This track was unknown to me. From her 1980 album, ‘Mel’ this is a tune called ‘Cheiro De Amor; which Google translate tells me means ‘The Smell of Love’. Why do I think that something has been lost in the translation? The bass player is Luizano Maia, the Uncle of the Brazilian Pino, Arthur Maia.
