Bass Player: Lincoln Goines
The bass parts to Mike Stern tunes are great to transcribe because they tend to be concise and accurately performed without a massive amount of nuanced improvisation. Stern’s compositions quite often hinge of repetitive riffs that allow for that ‘call and response’ thing that he likes to solo over; written riff – improvised response – written riff – improvised response. The track also features guitarist Eric Johnson who guests on a couple of tunes on the album.
This is the Lincoln Goines bass part to the tune ‘6th Street’ from the 2009 Mike Stern album, ‘Big Neighbourhood’. It gets repetitive towards the end with Goines adding some inventive fills but, up to that point, it is a nice sedate read at a sensible tempo so should be a good exercise to measure your reading chops on.
